In 2005, during the EFORT Congress, which was held in Lisbon, we were challenged to start the Portuguese Arthroplasty Register.

We accepted the challenge, and a Comission was formed, during the Annual Meeting of SPOT, in October of that same year. That Comission had 5 years to work and make the Portuguese Arthroplasty Register a reality.

The idea was well taken by the Portuguese Health Authorities which assured us their support.

Then there was a period of debate and brainstorm from which the committee came up with a project of database. In order to legalize that database, we had to submit it for approval to the Portuguese Comission of Data Protection. After some adjustements, this project was approved on January 2008 (Authorization nr. 89/2008).

We then put into practice what was on paper, and the trial version was presented in October 2008, during the 18th Annual Meeting of SPOT, in Vilamoura, where we had the President and the Secretary General of EAR (European Arthroplasty Register).

The difficulties were overcome and the test phase was over. The various forms were tested and corrected, and the organizational structure was optimized. A lot of networking was done and we gathered support from various sources.

The General Assembly of SPOT, on March 28th 2009, approved the project and determined that the data collection would start on June 1st. Meanwhile, the Portuguese Arthroplasty Register was launched, in a ceremony which took place in Sintra, on April 18th of that year.

RPA has been active since June 1st 2009.
